Air-Brushing to hide a disaster

Monday, March 1st, 2010

We had an exterior shop door that had been kicked in a couple of times, sloppily reinforced, kicked in again and repaired.  So in other words, the door was not looking to good.   It was our personal disaster.

I painted it a solid color at one point, but it still looked beat in.  Later that month I started doodling on it, but it just looked like graffiti.

It took months of pondering and thinking and mostly ignoring the door until one day it hits me.  The door.  It hit me.  Well, someone opened it up and I was standing too close… you get the picture.

Then I think…  I’ll paint an eye on the door.

So I set out to air brush an eye, a big eye on the door.  No problems.  Now there’s an eye on the door and the door still looks like crap.  What to do?  I don’t know.  So the door stays like that for a month or two.  Until one day it hits me… again.  Damn door.  This door is a monster.

Ding.  Light bulb goes off in my head.

The idea: Paint a monster around the eye and make it look like its crashing through a brick wall which will cover the entire door.

Air brushed Shop Door

I wasn’t happy with it.  I left it alone for several more months.  Then one day… no… it didn’t hit me.  Came close, but I knew to jump out of the way.

I worked on refining it, and finally ended up like this.

Final revision of the shop door

You can see the door knob, middle left.  It was fun while it lasted.  We had to move out of the shop about  a year ago.  The door was painted over, and now these two pictures are all that’s left.
